Nolan Smith and the Duke Blue Devils return to the topThe Duke Blue Devils once again regained the top spot in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll after the previous week's top four - Kansas, Ohio State, San Diego State, and Texas - all lost enabling the then fifth-ranked Blue Devils to jump to the top. However, the news of Duke being amongst college basketball's elite isn't news, but the St. John's Red Storm being ranked in the top 25 is news! The last time St. John's was ranked in the coaches poll was in 2000, but even more important, the last time they were in the NCAA Tournament was in 2002. Considering their record (17-9; 9-5 in the Big East), the Red Storm have a really good shot to make the party known as March Madness this year. Head coach Steve Lavin is in his first season as St. John's man on the sideline and has given the Red Storm faithful something to cheer about again. New York basketball isn't the same unless St. John's is doing well and considering the recent trade for Carmelo Anthony by the New York Knicks, it's safe to say that New York hoops is back in a big way.

Carmelo Anthony is traded to the New York Knicks joining Amar'e Stoudemire

The 'Melo Drama is now over as Carmelo Anthony was traded to the New York Knicks in a blockbuster deal that sees him joining forces with Amar'e Stoudemire to hopefully change the landscape of the Eastern Conference. But, will it? The full deal has Anthony, who was scheduled to be a free agent in the offseason, Chauncey Billups, Renaldo Balkman, Anthony Carter, and Shelden Williams going to the Knicks and Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Timofey Mozgov, a 2014 first round picks, additional picks (second rounders), and cash going to the Nuggets. In addition, the Knicks will send Eddy Curry, Anthony Randolph, and cash to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Corey Brewer, who was reported earlier to go to the Nuggets, so this still needs to be substantiated.

2011 NHL Heritage ClassicSo the Calgary Flames continued their hot streak in the freezing cold, beating the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 in the 2011 Heritage Classic, held at McMahon Stadium in Calgary. Throughout the game, the announcers could only talk about the dropping temperature, how bad the ice was and what the players had to do to adjust to the outdoor conditions. Despite the success of the Winter Classic in recent years, aren’t these games getting a little out of hand?

Blake Griffin wins slam dunk contest by jumping over a carBlake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers took a pass from teammate Baron Davis and dunked the ball. Normally that wouldn't be anything special since it happens a lot, but this time it was during the slam dunk contest during NBA All-Star weekend. Oh, and it was over a car. This dunk proved to be the exclamation point to help Griffin defeat the Washington Wizards' JaVale McGee in the slam dunk finals. Other participants included the Toronto Raptors' DeMar DeRozan and the Oklahoma City Thunder's Serge Ibaka.

John Wall wins MVP of Rookie-Sophomore gameJohn Wall of the Washington Wizards was the first overall pick of the 2011 NBA Draft and it's only fitting that he was the best rookie and overall player on the court during the NBA All-Star weekend's Rookie Challenge, winning both the game and MVP. While Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers was the hometown favorite, he didn't play long enough to make as much of an impact of Wall who finished with 12 points and a record 22 assists. The previous record in the game was held by Chris Paul who had 17 assists in 2007. Wall provided many alley-oop passes to his fellow rookies, including Griffin who finished with 14 points, as well as former Wall teammate at Kentucky, DeMarcus Cousins, now with the Sacramento Kings accumulated an impressive 33 points and 14 rebounds.

Chris Mullin amongst 12 finalists for Basketball Hall of FameThe Basketball Hall of Fame named 12 finalists for inclusion into the select group of outstanding basketball players/contributors to the game. Chris Mullin, Dennis Rodman, Jamaal Wilkes, and Tex Winters are among the dozen selected candidates. Maurice Cheeks, Ralph Sampson, Teresa Edwards (five-time Olympian), Tara VanDerveer (Stanford women's coach), Dick Motta (former NBA coach), Herb Magee (Philadelphia University coach), Hank Nichols (college basketball referee), and (Golden State Warriors VP/GM) Al Attles. Dennis Rodman should be a no-brainer to get in amongst the players, but hopefully Mullin also gets in there as he was a stellar college basketball player and one of the top shooters/scorers in the NBA during his time in the league. In fact, he was also a member of the first Olympics Dream Team.

Albert Pujols reports to St. Louis Cardinals camp without a contractAlbert Pujols, arguably the best overall player in baseball today, did not come to a contract agreement with the St. Louis Cardinals by the self-imposed deadline of Wednesday, February 16th. The reason Pujols designated a deadline was to not cause any distraction during the season for the team. However, considering all the things that Pujols can do and what he's done for the organization, how can his pending free agency after the 2011 not cause any degree of distraction? The usual big money teams, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, already have first baseman, but will undoubtedly have some interest should Pujols hit the market. Other interested teams include the Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, and N.L. Central rivals, the Chicago Cubs.

Kris VersteegThe Toronto Maple Leafs fire sale continued on Tuesday when GM Brian Burke dealt forward Kris Versteeg to the Flyers for their first-round and third-round picks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The Leafs have also made two separate deals with Anaheim in the last two weeks with the Leafs picking up Joffrey Lupul, Jake Gardiner, a fourth-round pick in 2013 and Aaron Voros, only having to give up Francois Beauchemin and a seventh-rounder in 2011. These deals all seem to imply that Burke is silently admitting his rebuilding plan isn’t working out, so he’s making the move to Plan B.
